What if Meta’s photo-sharing service finally had some competition? Snippets of code in the App TikTok suggest that the Chinese company is preparing to launch a new social network.
Taken by surprise by the TikTok tidal wave, many social networks began to cheerfully copy the platform’s functionalities, going so far as to integrate “shorts” on YouTube and “Reels” on Instagram. It is now up to ByteDance to return the favor as the company is reportedly about to launch “TikTok Photos”, an Instagram clone.
An imminent launch?
The SP Android site actually decompiled the TikTok application and found several references to a new service that could well compete with Meta’s photo-sharing site. Numerous mentions in the app code actually suggest “Share this post on TikTok Photos“, “Sync your posts with TikTok Photos» or even “Join a photo enthusiast community» on a dedicated platform.
None of these messages are currently publicly visible to users of the application, but the number of references to this new platform in the code suggests that the release of TikTok Photos could occur very soon. In fact, a piece of code even writes it in black and white, explaining that “TikTok Photos will be launched soon, we hope to help you gain new followers through this new app.» A logo for the site is even already ready.
A real threat to Instagram?
TikTok’s foray into the world of photography is, in reality, not exactly new. At the end of 2022, the platform authorized the publication of photos (and blocks of text of up to 2000 characters) in the general feed, where the short videos which have made the platform successful are usually found. A fair retribution after Meta generously plundered a number of ideas from TikTok in recent years.
But the Chinese firm could therefore give more importance to photo sharing and make it a means of expression in its own right in its software ecosystem, which could hurt Instagram. TikTok benefits from a very strong fashion effect and a fairly captive audience that it would not necessarily be very complicated to convert into users of TikTok Photos.
If on top of that, the new social network manages to adapt its terribly effective recommendation algorithm to a photo sharing platform, Instagram could well join Facebook in the ranks of platforms that are out of fashion and largely snubbed by young people.
