Ex-pole vaulter succumbs to cancer

Great sadness for Tim Lobinger. The ex-pole vaulter has succumbed to cancer. He was only 50 years old.
Tim Lobinger is dead (1972-2023). The former pole vaulter died of cancer at the age of 50. The “Rheinische Post” has learned on Thursday evening from the environment of the former track and field athlete. Lobinger celebrated great success as a pole vaulter from the late 1990s. At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2003, he won the gold medal. Lobinger had repeatedly spoken openly about his cancer in recent years.
Tim Lobinger’s long battle with cancer
At the beginning of 2017, the ex-athlete received the devastating diagnosis of leukemia. The cancer initially seemed to be defeated by stem cell therapy, but the disease returned. Lobinger made this public at the beginning of last year – and at the same time was optimistic and combative to defeat the terrible disease. In the summer of 2022, Lobinger was then able to lead his daughter Fee down the aisle. “On that day I was only the father of the bride, not Tim, who was suffering from cancer. That was really good for me,” he told the magazine “Bunte” at the time.
In the fall of 2022, Lobinger himself reported the shocking news to the public: “There will be no more healing for me”. His cancer was “too aggressive” for that. Lobinger reported this to the “Bild” newspaperto add in the same breath: “Every day that I get to live and spend with my family is worth fighting for”.
Daughter Fee last made him grandfather
At the end of last year, Lobinger was able to witness the birth of his granddaughter. “The little one is incredible,” he said happily in an interview with the magazine “Bunte”. Just over a week ago, the ex-athlete returned with an Instagram post after a long radio silence, in which he was still combative.
Lobinger was married to triple jumper Petra Lobinger (56) from 1994 to 2003. The couple had two children. In 2011 he married TV presenter Alina Baumann. A son was born of the marriage. The couple separated in 2017.
