The month of October is the month during which we go back one hour on the clock. And it’s this week that it’s happening.

The time change is now a phenomenon that is almost fifty years old, with the decree of 1975, which aimed to reduce the country’s energy consumption after the oil crisis of 1973. And it has since continued without change, despite attempts to European authorities to change the hours again.

That’s it, the short days are coming, with the sun setting soon around 5 p.m. The time change is in fact scheduled for this week, more precisely, for the night of Sunday October 29. At that point, the time will go back. At 3 a.m., the clocks will go back 60 minutes, to display 2 a.m.

It should be noted that we are talking here about the time as it is set and displayed in the territory of mainland France and in Corsica. Overseas territories, excluding Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, are not affected by this time change.

On the contrary, the time change (in autumn as well as in spring) applies to the entire European territory, and has done so since 1988. But be careful, if your smartphone or your computer will see their clock go automatically update, this is not the case for all electronic devices.

Thus, household appliances such as ovens, microwave ovens, clock radios or many automobiles will require your intervention.

Note also that it is possible to ensure the automaticity of this time change on your phone, by carrying out the following procedure:

  • For iOS, click on “Settings”, then “General”, and “Date and Time”. The “Auto-tuning” option must be enabled;
  • For Android, click on “Settings”, then “System”, and “Date and Time”. The “Auto Date/Time Enabled” option must be chosen.
