Timeless wardrobe – 5 ultimate tips

Tired of your closet being full – but still not sure what to wear? Our editor shares her tips for a timeless wardrobe.

Mix & Match

The key to a truly timeless wardrobe is above all the parts that we can combine with each other in a wide variety of ways. That's why it's important for me not to have too many items in my closet that are too colorful, have too many wild patterns or are super niche trends. You may not want to hear it, but you just won't wear these that often.

Instead, I invest in fashion essentials that I can always style and combine differently – regardless of the season. My favorites: basic bodies in white, black or beige, basic sweaters made of wool or cardigans in different lengths.

Basic bottoms

I also use the basics personally. However, the part of your wardrobe shouldn't necessarily consist only of jeans – the mix does it. That's why my basics also include black flared pants, leather pants and mini skirts. You can wear them with anything. For me, of course, the perfect black and blue jeans are also part of it. Personally, I prefer to wear a high waist – but here you can choose the fit that suits you best. Then you really wear them and they don't rot in the corners of your closet.

Go-to shoes

If your shoe closet is so full that you no longer know what you own, then you are definitely doing something wrong. When it comes to shoes, I always ask myself the following: Do I really wear them every day – and if not, how often would I wear them on other occasions? I have the problem that I can totally get excited about shoes with heels, but just don't wear them. Once or twice a year, if at all. Therefore it is important that you build up a stock of timeless shoes that you can wear. You can wear them often and combine them in many ways. However, different shoe styles are a must for me. Sneakers, overknees, ankle boots, boots, sandals, mules – the main thing is that they are timeless.

Accessory essentials

If our wardrobe remains largely basic, we have to add that certain something with accessories. One of my favorite trends is jewelry layering – I love enhancing my looks with earrings, necklaces and rings. Here you can also play with different styles. Pearl jewelry and chunky hoops are also really popular.

You can also completely change a style with bags. Do you use sporty models or rather classic ones? I personally love and have both – so I am prepared for any situation. But here too you should ask yourself: which bags do I really carry and which ones fit into my everyday life. It doesn't do you any good if you buy a bag that is totally impractical for you. Then it will be 100 percent just in the corner. Whether and how much money you invest in your accessories is of course up to you. Personally, I prefer to buy less, but rather invest in higher quality jewelry and more expensive bags (but not always).

Selected trend parts

Of course we don't always want to be basic, at least I don't. That is why there should also be a place for trendy items in every wardrobe – but only selected. Because you have to consider: What is trending now, you might not wear it again next year. Personally, I love trying out trends, but I often wait a bit before buying more specific pieces. Then I am sure that I think the trend is really cool too. I've bought things far too often that just ended up lying around. My current favorite trends are, for example, leather shirts, oversize jackets and combat boots. However, it is totally enough if I have a part at home here. Who knows how long I want to wear them.
