The American giant is about to introduce a little touch of novelty that may not please everyone. Users who have disabled their history will soon no longer have access to recommendations on the home page.

There’s one thing that Google, the parent company of YouTube, is particularly fond of: your data. And, it would seem that the Mountain View company still does not like users who are a little too concerned about their privacy.

Viewing history, trend 2023

It can be difficult to degoogle. If many services are able to brilliantly replace those offered by the web giant, it can also be pleasant to use some of them without compromising your privacy. It is at least possible, to some extent, with YouTube. The idea is to turn off viewing history, leaving a source of data about you less in the hands of Google, and even the rest of the world. And, while many will argue that the American giant, or other players, will necessarily have an exhaustive overview of your visit to YouTube, the reality is less obvious than that.

As proof, the streaming platform will encourage you to keep your viewing history activated. Indeed, in a blog post, it has just announced that it was going to modify the display of recommendations on the home page. If you can currently get an overview of trends in your region without history, soon you will be left with nothing but…emptiness. Instead, YouTube will display the following message: Your viewing history is disabled. You can change your settings at any time to see the latest videos that interest you. “All accompanied by a small link to quickly correct the problem. Other aspects of the platform could be affected, at least all those ” that require viewing history to provide video recommendations “.

It may be time to sort out your subscriptions

Of course, there is no question of preventing users who have deactivated their history from accessing the platform. The company states that ” you will be able to see the search bar and the menu on the left, without the recommendations, which will facilitate your research, the navigation in the channels you are subscribed to and the exploration of the thematic tabs “. Thus, the misfortune of some is the happiness of others. So thank you YouTube?

After increasing the cost of its Premium subscription in the United States, the American giant reminds us why its platform is very widely accessible at no cost. A large part of its income comes from advertising, and for this to work, it needs the data of its users, in particular, their viewing history. If those who deactivated it certainly did so for good reasons, the disappearance of the recommendations that follows could make many think. At least they still have time to think about it, since the change will be gradually rolled out over the next few months. Along with other novelties that do not arouse the hilarity of everyone.
