Microsoft wants to bring something new to the desktop version of its Outlook email: voice input.

Say goodbye to tedious typing of emails! Microsoft Outlook wants to revolutionize your email experience by allowing you to dictate your emails out loud. An innovative feature which, perhaps as early as this October, will help change the situation for Outlook users. And it’s your fingers that will thank you.

Voice dictation comes to Outlook for the web

After sending large files by email and integrating an automatic translation tool, Microsoft wants to carry out a new major update of Outlook for the Web. This will soon allow users to dictate their emails, instead of typing them.

This feature, powered by Microsoft Azure Speech Services, will require a stable internet connection to convert your speech to text (like the speech recognition tool in Google Docs). If all goes well, it should be launched next month, always with the aim of harmonizing the functionalities of its Outlook clients.

Microsoft is indeed striving to create a uniform experience for Outlook users, whether they use the Web, Windows or Mac version of the email. Adding voice dictation to Outlook in the browser version is therefore an important step.

However, it will not be available to everyone, and that is a shame.

Outlook users on mobile and desktop clients (i.e. the versions of the software that you download to your computer) already benefit from voice typing. Seeing it appear on Outlook for the Web was expected by many users.

To take advantage of this feature, you will not only need a good connection. You will also have to think about activating or equipping yourself with your microphone, even though today the vast majority of modern laptops are equipped with one.

We saved the best, well the worst in this case, for last. Because yes, voice dictation on Outlook Web will be reserved for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Which means that a paid subscription should be necessary to access this functionality, even if the window firm has not yet confirmed this requirement. But the trend seems to be towards launching premium features.
