A protocol designed to bypass VPN blocking systems
Proton VPN has found a way to circumvent the government blockages that unfortunately prevail in too many countries. In the development phase for several months, and designed in particular to meet the needs of citizens that have been felt since the start of the war in Ukraine, Stealth is an exclusive protocol developed by researchers at Proton AG.
The Swiss company known for its desire to offer a free and secure Internet via its various services, offers a new tool for dissidents, activists, militants, journalists but also ordinary citizens on a daily basis. Stealth works with the same goal as other obfuscated VPN protocols, the goal being to conceal the fact that the user is using a VPN by making the traffic appear like normal internet activity.
According to the editor, the classic protocols, such as OpenVPN, IKEv2 or WireGuard have become too easily identifiable on the network. Interviewed by us, Samuele Kaplun, technical director of Proton VPN, affirms that traffic via Stealth resembles a classic surfing encrypted via HTTPS.

A larger scale deployment in the coming weeks
Available in beta on the Android application for a few weeks, notably tested in Iran and Russia, Stealth is distinguished from a technical point of view by the combination of the Wireguard protocol and the TLS transmission protocol. Note that Proton also takes the opportunity to deploy a “Wireguard TCP” option in parallel.
Proton VPN currently reserves this new protocol for Android and iOS mobiles as well as macOS. The team tells us that they are working on the deployment of the protocol for the Windows application.
Stealth is available on all Proton VPN plans, including the free version.
