To play Hades on iPhone, you will need a Netflix subscription

The Hades video game is coming to mobile. In 2024, the title will be launched on iOS for iPhone and iPad. But to play it, you will need to have a Netflix subscription.

Did you love it Hades on computer and console? Maybe you will like Hades on smartphone. The excellent video game developed by Supergiant Games, halfway between roguelite and action-RPG, will arrive in a few months on the iPhone. A port of the title to iOS is in progress, the studio confirmed in a message published on X (formerly Twitter) on November 11.

For the few people who don’t know at all Hades, a reminder: the game immerses you in mythological Greece. You play as Zagreus, the offspring of the god of the underworld, who has only one obsession: reaching the surface. But his father refuses his son’s plans for freedom in the great outdoors and will therefore put all kinds of obstacles in his way.

You must pass through several levels before exiting the realm of Hades—levels reminiscent of the circles of the underworld. Of course, these levels are populated with enemies and bosses. Fortunately, you can count on the other gods to seize a piece of their power… but be careful, they are easy to vex: if you don’t choose them, they punish you!

We often die in Hades. In fact, every run to reach the exit often results in death. But, the good part is that you come back stronger and stronger each time. Above all, the repeatability of the title is brilliantly achieved. It never gets boring, and the storyline evolves each time, with intrigue and connections between characters developing.

All this explains why Hades was considered by Numerama as the game of the year in 2020 and why it has won so many awards during its career, such as the best game award at the “Oscars of SF and Fantasy”. Its launch on iOS, two years after its arrival on console, testifies to the aura that this game has acquired over the years.

An exit from Hades on iOS in 2024

Now for the practical questions: Hades on iOS should be released in 2024, on a date yet to be specified. It is also at this period that must also arrive Hades II, which this time will feature Melinoë, Zagreus’ sister. The port to the iPhone will not be carried out directly by Supergiant Games, but by another studio, Secret6.

In principle, Hades must be accessible on Apple phones and tablets that have access to iOS 16. On the iPhone side, this concerns 23 models. On the iPad side, 21. This operating system was launched in fall 2022. The technical requirements, specifies Supergiant Games, will be refined later – perhaps the oldest models will be ineligible.

A particularity of the port of Hades on iOS, the game will not really be free, nor completely paid. In fact, the availability of the game will not be offered traditionally on the App Store, but via the Netflix Games service of the American streaming giant. This means that the game will be offered for free, but only to those who pay a subscription to the SVOD site.

There is currently no question of offering it otherwise on iOS. Furthermore, there is also no plan to deploy the roguelite on Android. To play it, you will need to be on a compatible iPhone or iPad, or bet on a console version (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch) or computer (Windows, MacOS).

Last particularity to consider: Hades will therefore be played with the touch controls of the iPhone and iPad. It is unknown if the game is truly playable at a high level. However, it will also be possible to connect a controller with Bluetooth, to have a console-type experience – and claim a very high level.

It is said that video games on Netflix Games are generally shunned by the public, despite the few dozen titles available. However, we thought that Netflix Gaming would not need exceptional games to succeed. Maybe with a hit as HadesNetflix Games will perhaps succeed in attracting the attention of gaming subscribers.
