To protect animals – Adlerarena supports project about common ravens

The team of the Adlerarena Burg Landskron is again involved in a valuable project. This time, the Konrad Lorenz Research Center is examining the ravens’ search for food.

Not only the flight demonstrations of the majestic birds of prey and owls in the Adlerarena Burg Landskron are unique, but also the tireless work of the falconers around Adlerarena founders Franz Schüttelkopf and Michael Holzfeind, who regularly strive for species protection and are on duty 365 days a year to feed up injured boulders. In addition, each bird is looked after individually in the castle arena and can enjoy its free flight every day. In order to be able to promote the protection of the bird of prey and owl species even better, the Eagle Arena team is also involved in numerous projects. This time the raven project of the Konrad Lorenz research center in Grünau/ Almtal (Upper Austria), which deals with the foraging of the raven, is being supported. The animals are equipped with GPS and acceleration sensors in order to filter out where they find food and how information about suitable feeding grounds spreads between individuals. “Ravens are fascinating and intelligent animals that also communicate with each other during flight,” explains shaking head. Four common ravens live in the castle arena, including 39-year-old “Max” and eleven-year-old raven lady “Isabell”, who are also involved in the project. “The more we can find out about these particularly intelligent birds, the better we can protect them,” emphasizes the falconer. Common ravens sometimes fly hundreds of kilometers to find a good food source. They are also ingenious voice imitators, form lifelong friendships and, by the way, are songbirds. Data analysis using GPS and motion sensors have already proven their worth with golden eagles.
