Virginie Efira well deserves her César for best actress

Mia is a Russian translator in Paris. One evening, in the middle of a storm, she decides to go have a drink in a brasserie, while waiting for a clearing to go home. Mia then finds herself caught up in the attacks of November 13, 2015. Three months later, when she has lost all memory of this traumatic event, she tries to recompose her memory and rebuild herself with other survivors.

You probably suspect it, but See Paris again is a very difficult film to watch, more than 7 years after the terrorist attack that hit the capital. To be honest, it’s hard to hold back tears during this highly emotional hour and a half. But we can also reassure you: the feature film, now available on Canal + since this Tuesday, March 7, 2023, is strangely a luminous film, which tries to put its characters back on the path of life.

Directed by Alice Winocour (augustine), whose brother was present at the Bataclan during the attacks, See Paris again never falls into easy pathos but rather seeks to truly pay homage to the victims and the delicate status of survivors. The music is never too present, the work on the light is remarkable and the shots are often disarmingly beautiful, to better represent the inner torments of the heroine, Mia.

And let’s talk, precisely, about this character, who quite simply gives Virginie Efira (Goodbye idiots) the most beautiful role of his career. It is not for nothing that the Franco-Belgian actress won the César for best actress during the 2023 ceremony: the actress is breathtakingly restrained, mixed with a sensitive sensitivity. See Paris again is thus a moving story, which completely reverses our emotions as well as our memories of this collective and intimate trauma. This cinematographic experience thus adds its small stone to the edifice of reconstruction after the tragedy, leaving us with misty eyes, but the heart sparkling with life.
