Tobacco tax increase planned: e-cigarettes could soon become more expensive

Increase in tobacco tax planned
E-cigarettes could get more expensive soon

So far, e-cigarette users have been spared tobacco tax increases – this is about to change. The increase in tobacco tax will probably also apply to vaporizers. The plan is to make cigarettes a little more expensive every year.

According to a media report, smokers in Germany could soon be asked to pay more. The Federal Ministry of Finance is planning to increase the tobacco tax, which should also apply to nicotine-containing e-cigarettes for the first time, reports the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung". The higher tax rate should also apply to vaporizers in the future and no longer the lower rate for pipe products, writes the newspaper, citing a draft of a tobacco tax modernization law that it has received.

This should go to the departmental vote this Monday. Accordingly, the tax on cigarettes should increase annually by eight cents per pack of twenty cigarettes from next year. For a 40-gram pack of fine cut, the tax increases by up to 15.7 cents.

According to the newspaper, the state expects this step to generate additional income of more than twelve billion euros in the years 2022 to 2026. The prerequisite for this is that more people do not stop smoking because of the higher tax, which the higher tax should achieve . Last year the federal government received a total of 14.6 billion euros, 2.7 percent more than in 2019.
