“See Michael at least twice a month”

Michael Schumacher has been shielded from the outside world since his serious accident. Jean Todt has been in contact with the ex-racing driver’s family for years. In an interview, the former Ferrari team boss tells how strong the connection between the old companions is even today.

Michael Schumacher sustained serious head injuries in a skiing accident in December 2013 in the French Alps. The diagnosis: traumatic brain injury. Since then, the former Formula 1 driver has been in rehabilitation and has been shielded from the public. The Schumacher family is also reluctant to provide information about the seven-time world champion’s health.

Someone who apparently knows exactly about Schumacher’s condition is the President of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) Jean Todt. As the 75-year-old reveals in an interview with the “Corriere della Sera”, he visits the Schumachers regularly. “I see Michael at least twice a month. I don’t leave him alone,” says Todt. “He, Corinna, the family: We have had many experiences together. The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and continues.” As Ferrari team boss, Todt and Schumacher worked together from 2000 to 2004. The result: five world championships and five constructors’ titles.

Todt has been part of the Schumacher’s immediate circle for years. The world association boss speaks about it again and again in interviews. Last summer, the Frenchman expressed the hope that Schumacher will be able to show himself in public again at some point. “He’s fighting,” Todt told the Daily Mail at the time. “I hope the world will be able to see him again.”

Just like in the “Daily Mail”, Todt also remained silent in an interview with the “Corriere della Sera” about Schumacher’s condition in order to protect his privacy. But he shared his assessment of Schumacher’s son Mick. He was “humble” and “polite” said Todt about the young racing driver who drives for the US team Haas. “For now, his ambitions will be limited by a car that is not competitive.”
