Tokyo advances, favorable wind from Wall Street

Tokyo (awp / afp) – The Tokyo Stock Exchange was in the green on Friday at the start of the session, benefiting from a sharp rebound the day before on Wall Street, in particular American technology stocks.

The flagship Nikkei index gained 1.21% to 27,746.06 points around 00:35 GMT and the broader Topix index gained 0.51% to 1,936.14 points.

Thursday’s rebound in New York was notably fueled by bargain hunting after two previous sessions of decline.

In addition, job creations in the United States in the private sector in May slowed sharply compared to April, according to the ADP report published Thursday, and the official American employment figures which will be published later this Friday could also alleviate fears related to inflation.

On the side of values

FAST RETAILING: the title of the Japanese ready-to-wear giant Fast Retailing climbed 4% to 65,690 yen after the strong growth in sales of its flagship brand Uniqlo in Japan in May (+ 17.5% over one year at constant scope ), according to figures released Thursday.

This is their best progress since the start of the group’s 2021/22 financial year, which began last September. Uniqlo’s sales during Japan’s “Golden Week” holiday in early May were “buoyant”, as were sales of its summer staples, according to a statement.

On the side of oil and currencies

Oil remained slightly in the green on Friday morning in Asia: around 00:20 GMT the price of a barrel of American WTI appreciated by 0.18% to 117.08 dollars and that of a barrel of Brent from the North Sea gained 0.21 % at $117.86.

On the foreign exchange market, the dollar was stable against the yen, at 129.84 yen for the dollar around 00:30 GMT, as Thursday at 21:00 GMT.

The euro appreciated against the Japanese currency, at 139.74 yen for one euro against 139.54 yen the day before.

The European currency also became more expensive against the greenback, one euro worth 1.0760 dollars against 1.0747 dollars Thursday at 9:00 p.m. GMT.
