Tom Cruise in space? A Russian film crew beat the actor!

Contrary to what was announced last week, Tom Cruise is not the first actor to shoot a movie in space. Explanations.

On Wednesday October 12, the president of Universal Pictures, Donna Langley, announced that Tom Cruise was going to be the first comedian to shoot a movie in space, after the triumph of Top Gun Maverick.

“Tom Cruise is going to take us to space. He’s going to take the world to space. That’s our plan”she said at the microphone of the BBC. “We have a big project in development with Tom, in which we would see him walking in space. He would take a rocket to fly to a space station and he would, with any luck, be the first civilian to move outside a space station”she specified.

Little is known about the plot yet. According to Donna Langlay, the film will set her action “principally” on Earth, then the hero will have to go to space. It will be“a character who will find himself in the situation of being the only person who can save planet Earth”. The film will be directed by Doug Liman, director notably of Edge of Tomorrow and Barry Seal, both led by Tom Cruise.

This information, taken up all over the world, was however not entirely true. As can be seen from an article published by The world on October 17, 2021, a Russian team has already shot the first feature film in space.

Actress Yulia Peressild and director Klim Chipenko took to the stars on October 5, 2021. They took off from the Russian cosmodrome located in Baikonur in Kazakhstan, alongside astronaut Anton Chkaplerov.

They spent 12 days on the International Space Station (ISS) and returned to Earth on October 17, 2021. 37-year-old Yulia Peressild was the actress playing the lead role in this film shot in space.

This feature film will be titled “The Challenge”. It will tell the story of a surgeon embarking on the ISS with the mission of saving the life of a cosmonaut.

Tom Cruise will therefore not be the first actor to shoot a film in space. The Russians won this round in a new race for stars after the one conducted in the 1960s and the putting into orbit of the first man by the USSR, Yuri Gagarin.

In the meantime, we will find Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning on July 12, 2023 at the cinema.
