Tom Cruise in Top Gun 3? “Maverick still has some under the hood” according to the director

After the phenomenal success of Top Gun Maverick, is a sequel possible? Director Joseph Kosinski is not against it!

Captain Pete Mitchell, alias Tom Cruise, will he return to service? After the triumph of Top Gun Maverick around the world, and its 1.4 billion dollars in revenue, will a 3rd opus be born?

“The idea is to know if there will be a story that is worth going back to”says director Joseph Kosinski. “For my part, I have the impression that Maverick still has some under the hood at the end of the film. He is not about to calm down”explains the filmmaker, interviewed by Deadline.

I feel like Maverick still has some under the hood at the end of the film.

The director then recalled the difficulties of filming, explaining that it could be difficult to ask the actors to repeat the experience. “I know we could convince Tom Cruise to get back on his plane, but I’m not sure we can do that for the rest of the cast”says Kosinski.

Indeed, the actors have all been subjected to very tough training, the production wishing to reduce the use of digital special effects to a strict minimum. According to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, this is one of the keys to the success of Top Gun Maverick.

“I think audiences see so many films with a deluge of special effects, which is wonderful, I get to see those works too, but sometimes it’s nice to see something real, to be energized by the camaraderie that emerges from these characters”explains the producer.

“Audiences love Marvel and DC movies. They’re beautifully made by very talented people. However, sometimes audiences want to see a story grounded in reality, and that’s what Top Gun gave us”he says.

“These pilots are protecting our country right now, flying around the world, and you’re taking a ride with them. You see what they do, you see what their lives are like, the trials and tribulations they have to go through. You actually live it with our actors”concludes Bruckheimer.

A sequel to Top Gun Maverick is therefore not to be excluded. In the meantime, we will find Tom Cruise on July 12 in Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning.

Note that Top Gun Maverick became Tom Cruise’s biggest hit in France with 6.67 million viewers, beating Rain Man’s record. Will Ethan Hunt’s new mission titillate this performance?
