“Impossible” is not a term that applies to Tom Cruise. On Friday, June 26, the Mission Impossible star was spotted disembarking from a helicopter alongside his son, Connor Cruise, in central London. The adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Connor is also a member of the Church of Scientology, of which his father is one of the most influential members. So, unlike his little sister Suri, he spends a lot of time with his father. Paparazzi captured photos of the 61-year-old actor smiling broadly as he left the helipad, while his son Connor, 29, sported a black baseball cap and sunglasses. His face had a serious and calm expression, in contrast to his father’s.
A seemingly innocuous father-son outing that nonetheless sparked controversy, as it took place a week after the actor’s youngest daughter, Suri Cruise, graduated, which he did not attend. To add to the controversy, the following evening, Tom Cruise was spotted at Wembley Stadium, enjoying Taylor Swift’s concert alongside thousands of Swifties. The actor was filmed laughing and chatting with the pop superstar’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, in the VIP tent, and even exchanged friendship bracelets with fans. Meanwhile, across the pond, Suri was receiving her diploma under the proud gaze of her mother, Katie Holmes. And it was under the name Suri Noelle that the young girl took to the stage, leaving her name, her father and her past behind her.
Connor and Bella Cruise members of the Church of Scientology: Nicole Kidman respects their choice
However, it’s hardly surprising that Tom Cruise didn’t attend his daughter’s big day, as they haven’t seen each other in ten years. In March 2023, a source exclusively told Page Six that the star of Top Gun played “no role” in the teenager’s life, a situation he had already admitted during a custody trial of his daughter, marked by his links to Scientology. As a reminder, Katie Holmes had made the decision in 2011 to leave her husband to protect her daughter from the influence of this controversial church, which notably prohibits its members from associating with non-believers.
So while Katie Holmes chose to distance herself and her daughter from what some consider a cult, Nicole Kidman did not make the same decision at the time. The two children she had with the actor were therefore raised according to the principles of Scientology, giving them the opportunity to spend time with their father. In November 2018, the 57-year-old actress spoke out about Connor and his sister Bella Cruise’s decision to remain members of this church. “They are adults. They are capable of making their own decisions,” the Moulin Rouge star told the Australian magazine Who. “They chose to be Scientologists and as a mother it’s my job to love them. I’m an example of that tolerance, that’s what I believe in.”
