Tom Cruise (Top Gun Maverick): Why did he divorce Katie Holmes?

Tom Cruise is still popular. The 59 actor has just completed a daunting promo marathon for the release of Top Gun: Maverick, which in just three days at the cinema, already has more than 650,000 admissions. Before talking about him again for a film, the American had lived a highly publicized romance with Katie Holmes. Everything went very quickly between the hero of Top Gun and the star of Dawson. After formalization in 2005, the couple had their first child, little Suri, in April 2006, before getting married in Italy the same year.

But the union quickly turned sour and the divorce was pronounced in 2012. The reason for this separation? The religion of Tom Cruise. The actor is indeed a follower (and ambassador) of Scientology (considered a sect in France). And Katie didn’t want their daughter to grow up under the Church of Scientology, which takes up so much of Tom’s life. She also blamed him for controlling her life and career. Giving priority to his faith in his family, Tom accepts the separation but definitively cuts ties with his ex… and his daughter! Indeed, he would not have seen Suri since 2013. It is therefore with his mother, who has sole custody, that the girl lives in New York. Since their separation, Tom has been particularly discreet about his love life. The actor would be single today while Katie has just found love again.

Luckily for Tom Cruise, his professional life is much brighter. He did the show at the last Cannes Film Festival, where he came to present the new Top Gun. During his visit to the Croisette, the actor took part in a masterclass in which he shouted out his love for cinema. “I make films for the big screen. My films will not be released directly on the platforms. Going to the cinema is sharing an experience, whatever our culture or language. I go to see the films in theaters when they come out. I put on my cap (so as not to be recognized). I like to see the trailers“, did he declare.

Tom Cruise is the headliner of Top Gun: Maverick, currently in theaters, whose synopsis is enticing: “After being one of the US Navy’s top fighter pilots for over thirty years, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell continues to push his limits as a test pilot. He refuses to rise in rank, because it would force him to give up flying. He is tasked with training a detachment of young Top Gun school graduates for a special mission that no pilot would have ever imagined. While on this mission, Maverick meets Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of his late friend, navigator Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. Faced with an uncertain future, haunted by his ghosts, Maverick will have to face his worst nightmares during a mission that will require the greatest of sacrifices.
