Toni Kroos will end his career as a professional footballer in a few weeks. He would like to play for Germany at the home European Championships.
Toni Kroos (34) is retiring from football. The national player announced this on May 21. However, German fans will still be able to cheer him on at the European Championships at home starting on June 14.
“No more Real. No more football.”
He thought about it for a long time and in the last few days came to the decision that his tenth season with Real Madrid “is also my last season with Real,” he says in the podcast “Just Luppen”. Anyone who has listened to him closely in the past knows that the only option for him is to end his career with the club. “And anyone who can now add up 1 plus 1 also knows that my last season at Real also means that this summer is over. Over at Real. Over with football.”
Thinking about such things is “much easier than saying it.” However, the “very, very momentous decision” has been made. “And I can now understand this feeling of being very happy on the one hand and very sad on the other.”
Also Kroos shares on Instagram his imminent end to his career. When he was introduced to Real Madrid in the summer of 2014, it changed his life as a footballer and as a person. It was the start of a new chapter for him, which will now come to an end after the season after ten years with the club.
The 2014 world champion wants to play for the DFB team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) one last time at the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany. “At the same time, this decision means that my career as an active footballer will end this summer after the European Championships,” he writes. “As I have always said: Real Madrid is and will be my last club. I am happy and proud that I found what I believe was the right time for my decision and that I was able to make it myself.”
