In Ravka, an imaginary universe, the kingdom is divided in two by an immense fog: the Fold. As Alina is recruited as a cartographer to lead an expedition through this dark barrier, her magical powers are revealed. She then becomes overnight a Grisha, a magician with special abilities. And its power could even free the Kingdom of the Fold…
Despite some scriptwriting facilities and other sometimes grotesque special effects, the first season of Shadow and Bone is still a great success, which easily deserves an 8/10.
Adapted from the successful saga of author Leigh Bardugo, the series sometimes suffers from a lack of clarity which can hinder understanding. But the aesthetics of this magical world is so neat, that we immediately immerse ourselves in the heart of the matter. We could thus spend hours detailing the quality of the costumes or the creativity of the sets. If the main character is sometimes annoying (like all the chosen ones in the works of fantasy), all the other protagonists benefit from fascinating trajectories, which we take pleasure in following over the episodes. And then actor Ben Barnes (Westworld) once again imposes his charisma by embodying the intriguing General Kirigan.
But why recommend a series dating from two years ago, on this Wednesday, February 16, 2023? Quite simply because you have exactly one month left to catch up on these 8 episodes before discovering the second season, scheduled for March 16, 2023 on Netflix.
