Beverly Hills Cop follows the story of Axel Foley, a Detroit police detective with a knack for insubordination. He finds his childhood friend Mikey Tandino, just arrived from Beverly Hills, but the latter is shot dead before his eyes. Foley learns that Tandino possessed German bearer bonds of dubious provenance, and to carry out his investigation, goes to Beverly Hills, where his methods will wreak havoc.
Eddie Murphy’s improv
This detective film could have become yet another 80s thriller if it weren’t for Eddie Murphy’s personality and humor which shines through in every shot. The colorful responses (often gritty) are legion, the jokes come out at the speed of a machine gun, and often in improv!

Eddie Murphy is – somewhat – supervised by the director Martin Brest, who will then sign the buddy movie par excellence, Midnight Run with De Niro and Charles Grodin, then Le Temps d’un weekend, which will earn Al Pacino his Oscar or again Meeting with Joe Black.
A film, a star
At the time, Eddie Murphy was already a regular on the comedy show Saturday Night Live, one of his stand-ups had moved to the movies and he had shown what he was capable of in 48 Hours and Armchair for Two. But it was with Beverly Hills Cop that he became a star of the big screen, reaching the top of the bill alone, for a good fifteen years.
