Tonight on TV: 96 minutes is enough for Clint Eastwood to make this hero unforgettable

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: The Incredible True Story of Captain “Sully” Sullenberger.

On January 15, 2009, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger performed the miracle of landing his US Airways plane, suffering from an engine failure, on the icy waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of the 155 passengers on board. While he is hailed by public opinion and the media, an investigation is opened, threatening to destroy his reputation and his career…

It is indeed this aspect of the story that Clint Eastwood explores in Sully, his biopic adapted from the book Highest Duty, co-written by pilot and author Jeffrey Zaslow. Particularly effective, its alternating editing manages to maintain the tension between the progress of the investigation and the accident itself over 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Without ever falling into the purely spectacular disaster film, Sully nevertheless relies on a breathless and anxiety-provoking reconstruction shot aboard a real Airbus A320 with a system of five cameras running simultaneously.

The filmmaker also called on the real rescuers of the time, who came back to reproduce their prowess in front of the camera, thus underlining the spirit of solidarity that the captain never ceases to salute. On screen, he bears the features of Tom Hanks, whose sober interpretation is matched only by the noble modesty of his character.

On AlloCiné, Sully holds a solid viewer rating average of 4.1 out of 5.
