Tonight on TV: a critically shunned adventure film that deserves a catch-up session

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Taron Egerton dusts off the myth of the Prince of Thieves.

In 2015, Appian Way, Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, announced a Robin Hood film project.

This mythical character has already benefited from several film adaptations, the best known of which are The Adventures of Robin Hood by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley, the Walt Disney animated film, Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves directed by Kevin Reynolds , or the Robin Hood played by Russell Crowe.

Thus, to dust off this myth, the production calls on the director Otto Bathurst, who has proven himself on several episodes of Peaky Blinders, for his ability to create a universe via a post-modern approach.

He who has no particular interest in Robin Hood, tales and legends or period films, wishes above all to reinvent the story of this character thanks to an origin story and to put it in parallel with contemporary themes: the corruption of governments and the church, and the power of revolution.

This is what he was accused of when the film was released in 2018. In the United States, he received three Razzie Award nominations (Worst remake, plagiarism or sequel, Worst film and Worst actor in a supporting role for Jamie Foxx). In France, the criticism is not tender either: “turnip cream” (Le Figaro Magazine), “a total failure” (Cinema Files)…

Broadcast this evening on France 3, Robin des Bois nevertheless deserves attention for the involvement of its main interpreter (before filming, Taron Egerton notably trained in the handling of the bow with the famous archer Lars Andersen, to the point of being able to shoot two arrows in less than a second).

But also for the diversity of its cast (Jamie Foxx, Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn, Eve Hewson…), as well as for a new vision of Nottingham, inspired by diverse and varied architectures, from medieval Europe to South Asia. 18th century, passing through the brutalism of the 20th century.

Robin Hood by Otto Bathurst with Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Jamie Dornan…
