Tonight on TV: a female revenge film that dynamises the genre

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Carey Mulligan in a female revenge film.

Focus Features

Marking the move to directing Emerald Fennell – author of novels, showrunner of the second season of Killing Eve and also an actress – Promising Young Woman is intended to be a story of female revenge that differs from the usual stories of the genre. First by its main character: an ordinary woman far from the stereotypes of excessively violent and sexy women. Finally, by its oscillation between black comedy and thriller, thanks to inspirations like Fargo and Prête à tout, which mix humor and macabre situations. Produced by LuckyChap Entertainment, a company headed by Margot Robbie among others, the film is thus in line with the #MeToo movement, while questioning our own share of responsibility within the patriarchal system.

Explosive and whimsical, Promising Young Woman is carried by the excellent Carey Mulligan in a counter-intuitive role, her filmography full of romantic and serious heroines (An Education, Always With Me, Gatsby the Magnificent, Far from the Madding Crowd, etc.). Quoted in the biggest award ceremonies, including the BAFTAs, where he won Best British Film and Best Screenplay, Promising Young Woman also won the Best Original Screenplay statuette at the Oscars, among 5 nominations.
