After experimenting with comics and radio, Alain Chabat began to break into television in the mid-1980s, working for the new Canal+ television channel.
He especially knows the success by forming the group of comedians Les Nuls with Chantal Lauby, Bruno Carette and Dominique Farrugia. Their comedy shows are quickly becoming popular.
In 1994, the trio (without Bruno Carette, who died in 1989) played the role of The City of Fear, under the direction of Alain Berbérian. With more than 2 million admissions, the film is a success and launches Alain Chabat as an actor to follow.
The following year, the budding actor played a macho and unfaithful husband in Gazon maudit. His performance earned him a César nomination for Best Actor.
It was in 1996 that Alain Chabat started directing with Didier. In addition to the caps of screenwriter and director, he also endorses that of main actor in the role… of a dog who has become a man!
He plays alongside Jean-Pierre Bacri, impeccable in the skin of a sports agent responsible for guarding a friend’s Labrador for a week while he is entangled in dark affairs.
Quirky comedy flirting with the absurd, Didier is stuffed with the humor of Dummies – the gags are hilarious, the dialogues hard-hitting, and the end credits are delirious… – while hinting at a style specific to the future father of Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra.
Upon its release, the film was a commercial success (nearly 3 million admissions at the box office), which earned Alain Chabat the César for Best First Work, as well as a second César nomination for Best Actor.
