Tonight on TV: an action film with Daniel Auteuil playing (brilliantly) Jean Marais, we love it!

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a very entertaining swashbuckling film with Daniel Auteuil.

“If you don’t come to Lagardère, Lagardère will come to you!” These are the words in the form of an oath thrown by Lagardère to the Count of Gonzague, who has hatched a plot against his friend, the brilliant Duke of Nevers, to capture the fortune of his rich cousin. It will take the Chevalier de Lagardère sixteen years to avenge his friend, make morality triumph, save honor and find love.

This pitch is that of Le Hunchback, released in theaters in 1997, an excellent swashbuckling film adapted from the serial novel by Paul Féval. The opportunity for Daniel Auteuil to brilliantly follow in the footsteps of Jean Marais, who played the character of Lagardère in the famous version by André Hunebelle dating from 1960.

The Hunchback allows director Philippe de Broca to return to the genre of the swashbuckling film a quarter of a century after Cartouche, one of his collaborations with Jean-Paul Belmondo. And the result is a real success: the version worn by Daniel Auteuil is a little classic of action and adventure cinema. A great spectacle full of enthusiasm, of which we will salute the quality of the historical reconstruction as well as its high-end casting within which, alongside Daniel Auteuilwe find in particular Fabrice Luchini, Philippe Noiret, Marie Gillain and Vincent Perez, just that!

4 months of filming, 140 million francs budget, 9 César nominations and numerous spectators…

Filmed over four months between Ile-de-France and the city of Le Mans, The Hunchback, with its budget of 140 million francs, one of the biggest productions of the time, won over critics and audiences alike. The feature film, nominated nine times for the César with a statuette rewarding the quality of its costumes, attracted more than 1.6 million spectators to French cinemas. What if for you, this Sunday evening in your living room was an adventure?

Tonight on Arte at 9 p.m.

Daniel Auteuil will be appearing in “Fil” on September 11:
