Tonight on TV: an unnoticed animated film that deserves a catch-up session

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a nugget of animation by the creators of “L’Âge de Glace”.

Written by Munro Leaf in 1936, the children’s book The Story of Ferdinand was adapted into a short film by Walt Disney two years later. Lasting about 8 minutes, it is directed by legendary animators, including Ward Kimball, creator of Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio and the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. The Oscar-winning short is best remembered for its high-quality technique and unconventional values.

Indeed, the story is that of Ferdinand, a bull with a big heart, victim of his imposing appearance. Accidentally captured and torn from his home village, he is nevertheless determined to find his family and his roots. He then embarks on an incredible adventure across Spain, accompanied by the craziest of teams!

In 2017, it is this time the Blue Sky studios which seizes this tale for a new cinematographic adaptation, in feature film. The realization is entrusted to the Brazilian Carlos Saldanha, who had already worked on the successful trilogy Ice Age, as well as on Rio 1 and 2.

This is the opportunity to discover this magnificent hymn to tolerance for a whole new generation. In a bucolic and colorful Spain, the film strings gags through a wide range of hilarious animals, while evoking themes of self-confidence, but also animal abuse. Nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Film, Ferdinand seduced 1.8 million French people when it was released. If you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time to catch up!
