Tonight on TV: be careful, you may not recover from the end of this masterful thriller

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the best Brad Pitt film according to AlloCiné spectators.

After having signed numerous music videos and other advertisements, David Fincher launched into the seventh art in 1992 with Alien 3. A baptism of fire of which he does not have good memories, his freedom of maneuver having been considerably reduced by the 20th Century Fox. With Seven, three years later, the budding director saw the chance of his life looming. He found in the independent studio New Line Cinema the ideal partner to design a project over which he would have total control.

Talentedly written by Andrew Kevin Walker, the film follows the investigation of two police officers, William Somerset, a near-retired cop, and young David Mills, into a psychopathic serial killer, who methodically plans his murders according to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, avarice, laziness, lust, pride, envy and anger.

Released in 1995, Seven is a landmark in the history of serial killer films. From the sublime opening credits to the effectiveness of the Morgan Freeman-Brad Pitt duo, including the sticky atmosphere and the sequence of murders, each more horrible than the last, it’s impossible not to be captivated by this gripping intrigue which carries a dark look at humanity.

Above all, what we remember from the feature film is its ending. Daring, excruciating, terribly pessimistic. It took all the perseverance of Fincher and his actors to keep it, against the advice of the studio, which wanted a more classic action-oriented ending. But it is undeniably thanks to this sequence, which will haunt you for a long time, that Seven entered the legend.

Commercial and critical success, Seven grossed $327 million at the worldwide box office for a production budget of $33 million. In France, it attracts nearly 5 million spectators to cinemas.

With an average spectator rating of 4.5/5, Seven is David Fincher’s feature film most appreciated by AlloCiné Internet users (tied with Fight Club).
