Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the reunion of Thomas Vincent and Clovis Cornillac.
After having worked with him on Brice de Nice and Les Chevaliers du Ciel, producers Eric and Nicolas Altmayer questioned Clovis Cornillac on his desires as an actor. The latter tells them of his desire to play a role similar to those held by Lino Ventura in the 1970s. He suggests that they discuss it with his screenwriter friend Eric Besnard (co-author of Convoyeur and Travaux).
He then has a political thriller in mind and focuses in particular on various facts concerning the abuses of the pharmaceutical industry. This is how he imagines The New Protocol: the story of Raoul Kraft, a lumberjack who lost his 18-year-old son in a road accident. After learning that the latter was a volunteer for clinical trials, he decides to investigate…
Thomas Vincent is then chosen to direct. He thus found Clovis Cornillac, whom he had already directed in 1999 in Karnaval – a film which had notably enabled the actor, then best known for his work on the boards, to gain notoriety in the cinema world.
Influenced by the westerns of Clint Eastwood, the latter signs a committed and effective thriller, with well-crafted suspense, transcended by the inhabited performance of Clovis Cornillac. At his side, Marie-Josée Croze, who had already given him the reply in Lies and betrayals and more if affinities…, is just as convincing.
