Tonight on TV: Considered one of the worst sci-fi movies in the world, this UFO deserves a catch-up session

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Mila Kunis heroine of the Wachowskis.

In 2009, the Wachowskis’ agent, Jeff Robinov, then president of Warner, offered them to develop an original franchise in the tradition of Matrix. Moving away from the cyberpunk of their famous trilogy, the latter opt for a reinterpretation of fairy tales within the framework of a space opera. Influenced by “The Odyssey” and “The Wizard of Oz”, where travel rhymes with the quest for identity, they invent the extraordinary destiny of Jupiter Jones, whose generic imprint could well upset the balance of the cosmos…

At the time, science fiction existed almost exclusively through superhero franchises. The Wachowski project, entitled Jupiter: The Destiny of the Universe, therefore proves to be promising by going off the beaten track. Unfortunately, Jeff Robinov slams the studio door just before filming begins, leaving the duo in a complicated position. Subsequently, the first projections give a disastrous verdict. Warner panics and postpones the release in the United States, from July 2014 to February 2015, a low period for blockbusters. As soon as it was released in theaters, press reviews were as catastrophic as its box office score, which barely brought in the equivalent of its budget.

Jupiter: The Fate of the Universe, however, deserves a catch-up session when it airs tonight on TFX. If the plot is agreed, the action, the romance and the great spectacle remain at the rendezvous. Let yourself be taken on board in this space epic with mythological accents, in this universe inspired by European architecture, in its hectic scenes and its dazzling special effects (thanks to the work of John Gaeta, Oscar winner for Matrix).

Jupiter: the Destiny of the Universe by Lilly and Lana Wachowski with Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean…
