Tonight on TV: it was on this shoot that Alain Delon and Romy Schneider fell in love

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a remake of “Liebelei” by Max Ophüls.

In the early 1950s, Romy Schneider was propelled to the forefront of the international scene thanks to the Sissi trilogy, where she played the famous Empress of Austria. But over time, the actress supports more and more difficult this role. Wishing to break away from it, she opposes the filming of a fourth part.

In 1958, barely 19 years old, Romy Schneider was approached by French director Pierre Gaspard-Huit to play the title role of Christine, a remake of Liebelei by Max Ophüls, which had notably launched the career of her mother, Magda Schneider, in 1933.

Having the right to choose her partner herself, the actress selects on photo the young first Alain Delon, seen in When the woman gets involved as well as in Be beautiful and shut up. The two young actors meet for the first time at Orly airport in Paris, in front of the press, on April 10, 1958.

If their first reports are stormy (they do not speak the same language and the current does not flow), an idyll ends up being tied between them during filming, like that which unites their characters. On March 22, 1959, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider celebrated their engagement in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Lugano, in front of the international press.

After five years of stormy relationship, Alain Delon leaves Romy Schneider for Francine Canovas, future Nathalie Delon, met at the end of the summer of 1962 and pregnant with their son Anthony.
