Are you a fan of good old-fashioned westerns? Do you love John Wayne, one of the stars of the genre, star of classics like Rio Grande, Prisoner of the Desert or Rio Bravo?
So good news: the Arte channel has the great idea of broadcasting this Monday evening the excellent The Four Sons of Katie Elder, in which the American actor excels.
Released in 1965, the feature film directed by Henry Hathaway, a great western specialist, immerses the viewer in Texas, at the very end of the 19th century. Katie Elder dies in poverty. At his funeral, his sons discover that the family ranch was lost in gambling during a game rigged by their father, just before the latter was murdered. The brothers will carry out their investigation together.
The Four Sons of Katie Elder, a classic and very effective western, marks a new collaboration between John Wayne And Henry Hathaway. The two men worked together on seven films, including 100 Dollars for a Sheriff, for which the actor won the Oscar in 1969, the only one of his illustrious career.
With The Four Sons of Katie Elder, which he filmed shortly after undergoing lung cancer surgery, Wayne reunited with Dean Martin seven years later Rio Bravo. It should also be noted that the film is an opportunity to discover a very young Dennis Hopper on screen and that the music is by the great Elmer Bernstein (The Mercenary Seven, The Comancheros, The Great Escape).
So many elements that deserve you to take a look at this very good, unfairly overlooked film.
