What if you rounded off the weekend with a little-known gem, a feature film telling the vibrant love story of a poor artist and a wealthy bourgeois woman on a liner hitting an iceberg? Well, enough of the jokes, we’re tuning in this Sunday evening to TF1 to (re)discover an absolute classic that’s not at all unknown: James Cameron’s Titanic, one of the biggest cinema hits in the world!
Is it still useful to present Titanic, the biggest success in history at the French box office with its 21 million admissions and during which you absolutely have to take a break at 2 hours and 39 minutes? The film immerses the viewer in Southampton, April 10, 1912. Renowned for its unsinkability, the largest and most modern liner in the world sets sail for its first voyage. Four days later, it hits an iceberg. On board, a poor artist (Leonardo DiCaprio) and a wealthy woman (Kate Winslet) fall in love.
But how does the idea of Titanic (which some rare critics have purely hated) did she therefore come to the visionary James Cameron ? “When I did research for AbyssI was fascinated by the technology used to explore the wreck of the Titanic”declared the filmmaker at the microphone of our colleagues at Première. “I really liked Atlantic latitude 41 (1958, Roy Ward Baker) And Titanic (1953, Jean Negulesco), but I wondered if we couldn’t incorporate into a film what we now know about what happened that night and create a story that would move back and forth between present and past.”
“I also wanted to tell a love story”he continues. “I had tried in Abyss, but without putting the love story before the science fiction story. When those two ideas came together, everything seemed to fall into place.”
A pharaonic project… with a soul
With its enormous budget of 200 million dollars, construction of the sets which required three months of work, filming which lasted 160 days, Titanic, whose special effects were produced by Digital Domain studios, the same ones that resurrected the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park, is a pharaonic company. But a pharaonic enterprise with a soul, a film from which real magic emerges and which fascinates with each viewing.
A great show unlike any other carried by the iconic cinema duo composed of Leonardo DiCaprio And Kate Winslet, Titanicwhose song we will obviously not forget to quote my heart Will Go On by Celine Dion, is quite simply a monument. The feature film, the fourth biggest success in history with $2.2 billion in revenue worldwide, won 11 Oscars.
