Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: an astonishing comedy by the unclassifiable Quentin Dupieux.
You don’t know the completely crazy universe of Quentin Dupieux? So why not start gently with Yannick, released in theaters last year, perhaps one of his most affordable films (but no less highly recommendable), then go gradually from there?
Released in theaters last year, the very offbeat but also moving Yannick immerses spectators during a performance of the play The Cuckold, a very bad boulevard. Suddenly, a man gets up and interrupts the show to take over the evening…
Yannick, a particularly original film, was shot in secret and in six days by the hyperactive Quentin Dupieux, including the Daaaaaali! is currently in theaters. “I wanted to do things differently, outside of traditional production methods”declares the filmmaker. “I make one film a year, with preparation over several months and a form of comfort. There, I wanted to return to my first love, that is to say the impossible film. Deep down, I always from me this thing that burns, this taste of the film that should not exist. Yannick is like a road trip in my filmography, it’s a separate object.”
Unlike most films Quentin Dupieux, Yannick does not rely on an absurd or fantastic element. “I have made so many films based on absurd principles with pirouettes and temporal games that it suddenly became surprising to make one in which there was not all that”confides the filmmaker to Trois Couleurs. “I wanted to be a little naked, without effects, to explore this issue of real time, which is a super dangerous zone in cinema. There are barely two or three ellipses in the film, it’s extremely rare . There are no artifices, and the rhythm of the dialogues also has a realistic aspect.”
The Raphaël Quenard revelation
The great advantage of Yannick, it is its main actor, Raphaël Quenard, incredible in the role of the one who parasitizes the performance of a play. But it would be unfair not to mention the three other protagonists of this unclassifiable film: Pio Marmaï, Blanche Gardin and Sébastien Chassagne are perfect as actors taken hostage by a Yannick which will most certainly have you debating at the coffee machine.
