In 2021, the general public discovered Eiffel on the big screen, an ambitious biopic of Gustave Eiffel led by Romain Duris in the role of the illustrious French engineer. This evening, you have the opportunity to (re)discover this great popular film which attracted more than 1.5 million spectators in theaters!
Directed by Martin Bourboulon, who has just revealed The Three Musketeers: Milady, Eiffel tells the story of Gustave Eiffel who has just finished his collaboration on the Statue of Liberty. He was then at the peak of his career.
The French government wanted him to create something spectacular for the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, but Eiffel was only interested in the metropolitan project. Everything changes when he meets his childhood sweetheart again. Their forbidden relationship inspires him to change the Paris skyline forever.
What he will then create is obviously the Eiffel Tower, symbol of the city of Paris and more generally one of the most famous monuments in the world.
A great romantic adventure that mixes the spectacular and the intimate, Eiffel, carried by Romain Duris and Emma Mackey, star of the Netflix series Sex Education, is high-end entertainment. A generous film in which we will salute the quality of the historical reconstruction, which is astonishing.
Martin Bourboulon wanted the Eiffel Tower (notably its different stages of construction) to be sufficiently present to keep the promise of a spectacular film. The filmmaker wanted the special effects to always appear in the background (contrasted by the characters in the foreground).
“I wanted to create an immersive side, captured on the spot, without ever highlighting technical prowess”he says. “To achieve this, I was able to rely on my production designer Stéphane Taillasson and its remarkable reconstruction of Paris at the time.
For digital visual effects, I was able to count on BUF in the person ofOlivier Cauwet who had just worked on Blade Runner 2049.” We have seen worse as a reference…
