Tonight on TV: Jack Nicholson only appears for 15 minutes and 43 seconds in this trial film, but it’s probably one of his best performances

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a legal thriller.

It was in 1992 that Aaron Sorkin wrote his first screenplay for the cinema. Initially, it was a play, produced on Broadway, based on a true story told to him by his sister, a military lawyer.

This story is that of two military lawyers sent to an American base at Guantánamo in order to elucidate the circumstances of the death of a marine, who died after being attacked in his room by two other colleagues.

Faced with the wall of silence from the officers and soldiers, there remains only one solution: summon to appear, on the witness stand, the person in charge of the base himself, Colonel Nathan Jessup, an authoritarian, arrogant and full of himself to whom everyone obeys with the finger and the eye.

Having heard of this play, a certain Alan Horn (future president of Warner) became interested in it with a view to a film adaptation, which he entrusted to director Rob Reiner.

After trying his hand at drama (Stand by Me), romantic comedy (When Harry Met Sally) and fantasy film (Princess Bride), the latter here rubs shoulders with the legal thriller. And it is clear that he has created a remarkable trial film, in the great Hollywood tradition.

Men of Honor is based on a solid scenario, certainly classic in style but with pleadings always rich in twists and turns, on dialogues that hit the mark and above all on a host of impressive actors, of which Rob Reiner knows how to get the best out of left.

In addition to Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and even JT Walsh and Kevin Pollak, Jack Nicholson particularly stands out thanks to a scene that remains famous, where he lets his rage explode in the skin of the famous Colonel Nathan Jessup.

A performance of around fifteen minutes which earned him an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category.
