Tonight on TV: one of the best French thrillers of the 2000s

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the first film adaptation of a novel by Harlan Coben.

After attracting more than 500,000 spectators with his first feature film, Mon idole, in 2002, Guillaume Canet returned behind the camera in 2006 to adapt the thriller Do not tell anyone (“Tell no one”in VO).

Sold in more than 6 million copies worldwide, this novel imposes its author, the American Harlan Coben, as one of the masters of international suspense.

The story is that of Alexandre Beck, who, eight years after the brutal murder of his wife Margot, receives an anonymous email telling him to click on a link at a specific time. While doing so, he discovers a video where a woman looks exactly like Margot…

Then begins a race against time, between the police launched on his heels, as well as a team of hired killers hired by a mysterious man in the shadows.

It is clear that Guillaume Canet perfectly transcribes this story full of suspense and twists on the screen, oscillating between action thriller (we note in particular the chase scene which takes place partly on the Paris ring road) and sentimental drama.

At the heart of the film, François Cluzet offers an impressive physical performance, which marks a real turning point in his career.

When it was released, Tell No One was a resounding public success with more than 3 million admissions. In addition, he won four Césars: Best Director, Best Actor for François Cluzet, Best Music and Best Editing.

A success which confirms Guillaume Canet as a leading director and which foreshadows the (very) numerous adaptations of Harlan Coben’s novels, most of them for television or the Netflix platform (Safe, Don’t get away, Une chance de trop, Just a look, Gone forever, Into the woods…)

With an average viewer rating of 3.9 out of 5 on AlloCiné, Tell No One is the favorite feature film among Internet users among Guillaume Canet’s filmography.
