Robert De Niro is Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino and even the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. But it is also the lesser known and yet excellent Angel Heart, directed by Alan Parker (Midnight Express, Birdy, Mississippi Burning).
Released in theaters in 1987, the feature film Angel Heart adapted from the novel The Sabbath in Central Park by William Hjortsberg, immerses the viewer in New York, in 1955. The private detective Harry Angel, played by Mickey Rourke, is hired by a certain Louis Cyphre (Robert DeNiro) to trace Johnny Favorite, a former crooner he helped launch.
Having become an invalid during the war, Favorite is said to be languishing in a psychiatric clinic in the region, but Cyphre suspects the establishment of covering up his death. Harry Angel soon learns that Favorite was kidnapped by two people from the South of the United States, for money. The investigation will prove more dangerous than expected, sowing death in its wake. She will also lead the detective to the mystical lands of New Orleans…
A powerful, dark fantasy thriller, Angel Heart, which plays with the concepts of good and evil, allows Robert De Niro to deliver a terrifying performance (and Mickey Rourke to obtain arguably the best role of his career ). With its incredible atmosphere, this relatively little-known feature film, in which Charlotte Rampling also stars, should not leave you indifferent.
If you are fans of sticky thrillers and Robert De Niro, we cannot recommend this Angel Heart enough, an astonishing thriller which attracted more than 1.3 million spectators in French cinemas. A little nugget to quickly discover!
