Tonight on TV: One of the world’s biggest box office hits

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a romance in the heart of a famous shipwreck.

Combining his fascination for the technology used to explore the wreck of the Titanic and his desire to tell a love story, James Cameron ended up in the 1997 film Titanic.

A veritable cinematographic monument, it mixes historical facts – the famous shipwreck of the liner reconstructed to perfection – with fictitious facts – the romance between the two protagonists embodied by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. A mastery rewarded with 11 Oscars (a record then held by William Wyler’s Ben-Hur), including Best Picture.

Upon its release, Titanic indeed became an international cultural phenomenon. Produced for a budget of 200 million dollars, it is the first film in the history of cinema to exceed the billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office, reaching a receipt of 1.8 billion dollars!

In 2009, James Cameron surpassed his own feat with Avatar (2.749 billion dollars when it was released). Ten years later, Avengers: Endgame dethroned it by earning 2.797 billion dollars until Avatar regained the lead thanks to a re-release in China and reached 2.922 billion. At the present time, thanks to the new exploitations of the film, Titanic thus holds the third place of the podium with a total of 2,201 billion dollars of receipts.

Avatar: Will The Way of the Water also break all records and oust its predecessor? Answer after the release on December 14th.

Titanic by James Cameron with Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane…
