Tonight on TV: rated 1.8/5, does this film with Dwayne Johnson deserve better than its reputation?

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a famous group of sexy lifeguards on the big screen.

It fascinated spectators around the world between 1989 and 2001, to the point of being the most viewed series in the world (1 billion viewers on average at a certain period).

With its breathtaking sets and its dose of action, Baywatch allowed its actors to experience their hour of glory – David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and David Charvet in the lead.

Rumors of a reboot – on the big screen this time – logically began to emerge at the beginning of 2006. However, we had to wait until 2014 for the casting to become clearer: it was Dwayne Johnson who took over the legendary role of Mitch Buchannon, forced to join forces with a new recruit, Matt Brody, played by Zac Efron, as ambitious as he is hotheaded.

Directed by Seth Gordon, Baywatch – Baywatch follows in the tradition of trashy comedies such as 21 Jump Street. Released in 2017, suffice to say that the film did not convince at all. This is evidenced by its ratings on the AlloCiné page: 1.8/5 in press ratings and 2.6/5 in spectator ratings.

Box office-wise, it’s not any better: with a budget of $69 million, the film “only” totaled $177 million in revenue worldwide. In addition, it was nominated in four categories at the Razzie Awards, including Worst Film of the Year.

The bad reviews combined with a commercial result below expectations thus buried the project, although well advanced, of a new series from the franchise.
