Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: A much-criticized “Predator” movie, but maybe not that bad…
After Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3 or The Nice Guys, Shane Black, the screenwriter of Lethal Weapon and interpreter of the character of Hawkins in John McTiernan’s 1987 classic Predator, co-wrote and directed here the film of the saga he describes as “the deadliest and most frightening that exists so far”…
Since our first encounter with the ultimate interstellar fighters of predator (1987), the brutal space warriors have visited our world many times. However, this time, something completely different – more powerful, fiercer, and more evolved thanks to DNA from other species – is stalking us one by one.
When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag group of ex-soldiers and a reluctant science teacher can save the human race from extinction.
The fourth installment in the successful film series and sixth feature film in the entire franchise, The Predator, produced by John Davis, who had already financed the first three installments, takes place between the events of Predator 2 (1990) and Predators (2010).
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, the feature film received mixed reviews although it enjoyed some success at the box office, grossing over $160 million worldwide on a budget of $88. millions of dollars.
For some people, The Predator is therefore a real disappointment, seen as a comedy ridiculing the franchise rather than the sci-fi thriller it is supposed to be – which explains its rating of 1.9 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers.
For others, it dusts off the “Predator” myth and is seen as an assumed B movie, reminiscent of the 80s, which is deliberately more raw and more enjoyable, and which offers an irreverent and rhythmic reinterpretation of the saga – to take at 1st degree!
Some advise you to flee, others to go for it: a happy medium would be to give it a chance with reserved advice. After all, the film ranks 4th (out of 7) in the list of the best films in the franchise on the Rotten Tomatoes site.
On the program therefore, 1h47 of violent and uninhibited action, that’s for sure. Will you be part of the first camp or the second? Your turn to judge.
