In 2017, Ridley Scott looks at the true story of a kidnapping: that of John Paul Getty III, grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, which occurred in Rome in 1973.
While the Calabrian mafia demands a ransom of 17 million dollars, the billionaire believes that the kidnapping of his favorite grandson is not a sufficient reason to part with part of his fortune. Paul’s mother, on the other hand, will do everything to obtain his release, notably joining forces with a former CIA agent.
The film, titled All the Money in the World, was already in the works when Kevin Spacey, who plays J. Paul Getty, found himself accused of multiple sexual assaults by several people.
Taking the lead, Ridley Scott decided, in agreement with his producers and the studios, to delete the actor from the feature film and to reshoot all his scenes with Christopher Plummer, who was, according to him, his first choice to play the character .
The latter turns out to be perfect in the role of this billionaire who views each human interaction as a transaction. Because it is less the reconstruction of a kidnapping than the development of a reflection on the power of money that interests Ridley Scott here. And it is precisely on this point that All the money in the world is the brightest.
