Five years after The Toy, Francis Veber returns to directing with The Goat. For his second feature film, he composes the shock tandem Gérard Depardieu/Pierre Richard. The first lends his features to detective Campana, while the second plays François Perrin, an unlucky accountant forced to accompany him on his investigation.
Initially, however, the director envisaged a completely different duo: Lino Ventura and Jacques Villeret. But things don’t happen. Francis Veber then offers the role of the blunderer to Pierre Richard, who immediately thinks of Gérard Depardieu to give him the reply. The performance of the latter is unanimous, even though he has never done comedy.
Upon its theatrical release, The goat made a real hit at the French box office. With a total of just over 7 million admissions, the film is ahead in particular of Raiders of the Lost Ark by Steven Spielberg and The Professional by Georges Lautner.
With an average viewer rating of 3.7 out of 5 on AlloCiné, The goat marks the most successful collaboration of Gérard Depardieu and Pierre Richard, who will meet again for Les Compères, then Les Fugitives, thus offering us a cult trilogy.
