At the age of 9, Peter Jackson discovers with wonder the first King Kong film, directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack and Merian C. Cooper in 1933. The shock is such that the young man decides to make a career in cinema . Done, he was on the verge of realizing his childhood dream when Universal Studios approached him in 1996 to tackle a remake. But the project is finally canceled for fear of competition with Godzilla.
The New Zealander then embarked on another epic adventure: the cinematographic adaptation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien, which imposed him as a safe bet in Hollywood. Building on this success, he finally tackles his reinterpretation of King Kong, paying particular homage to the classic that inspired him by setting the action of his film in 1933.
With a pharaonic budget of 207 million dollars, which makes it one of the most expensive works ever made, King Kong frankly has nothing to envy to its illustrious model. If he does not skimp on the impressive special effects (rewarded by the Oscar, the BAFTA and the Saturn Award for Best Visual Effects), Peter Jackson delivers above all a film mixing adventure and romance.
This is certainly the greatest quality of this oversized feature film: in the midst of spectacular combat scenes and majestic settings, it never forgets to give body and soul to the giant primate, surrounded by a five-star cast. Great entertainment cinema.
