Tonight on TV: the film that made us understand that the Harry Potter saga was not just for children

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the third cinematic part of the adventures of the famous sorcerer.

After directing the first two parts of the Harry Potter saga – The Philosopher’s Stone in 2001, then The Chamber of Secrets in 2002 – Chris Columbus decided to pass the torch.

The world of Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (The Little Princess, Y tu mamá también) quickly convinced producer David Heyman who decided to hire him to direct the third part – The Prisoner of Azkaban.

In this opus, Harry Potter enters his third year at Hogwarts School. He then becomes the target of Sirius Black, a dangerous criminal wizard who escaped from the dark prison of Azkaban with the sole aim of killing him…

At the helm, Alfonso Cuarón does complete justice to the darkness of the original novel, which definitively breaks with the family nature of the previous episodes and sets the more mature tone of the following ones.

On the one hand, the director develops the psychological dimension of the characters, thus providing additional depth. On the other hand, he gives the feature film a specific visual aspect, opting for dark gray and blue tones, dramatic lighting and distressing shadow play.

In addition, the film welcomes new emblematic faces: Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Timothy Spall, Emma Thompson and the late Michael Gambon who replaces Richard Harris in the role of Director Albus Dumbledore.

Released in 2004, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is a success: 796 million dollars in worldwide revenue for a budget of 130 million, including more than 7 million admissions in France.

On AlloCiné, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban holds a solid 4/5 viewer rating average.
