Former actor, Taylor Sheridan converts to the profession of screenwriter to deal with a subject that affects him directly: the drug cartels on the border between the United States and Mexico. Originally from Texas, he sees how the charm of this area has completely disappeared, giving way to a place without faith or law. Following extensive documentation, he signs the script for Sicario – literally “hitman” in Spanish.
Unlike most films that address these themes, the protagonist of the story is a woman, inspired by a soldier he met in Texas. A point that immediately appealed to Canadian director Denis Villeneuve when he joined the project. Thus, surrounded by Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro or even Jon Bernthal, all used to playing big arms, Emily Blunt emerges in the skin of a captivating heroine. She plays an idealized young recruit of the FBI, forced to question her convictions to survive in the heart of the fight against drug trafficking.
Part war movie, part noir thriller, part moral drama, part existential tragedy Sicario shatters all the codes of the genre. Thanks to a careful staging, a skillfully maintained tension and a very instructive documentary aspect, Denis Villeneuve achieves a shocking political work.
In addition to its excellent critical reception upon its release, the film met with commercial success, garnering $84 million in worldwide box office receipts. On AlloCiné, Internet users gave it an average viewer rating of 4 out of 5.
