In 2010, Scarlett Johansson made her debut in the MCU, lending her features to Natasha Romanoff, alias Black Widow, in Iron Man 2. Her character quickly won favor with the public, so much so that she played it six times ( in Avengers, Captain America the Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame).
In 2017, Marvel Studios officially begins the development of a project solely centered on the superheroine. Soberly titled Black Widow, the film – whose events take place after Captain America: Civil War -, confronts Natasha Romanoff with the darkest part of her past, which pushes her to reconnect with her spy activities. Scheduled for release in spring 2020, the feature film met with several postponements following the Covid-19 pandemic, finally landing on screens in July 2021. And simultaneously on Disney+ in certain countries.
In the process, Scarlett Johansson filed a complaint against Disney for non-compliance with the terms of her contract which stipulated a distribution exclusively to the cinema – her salary being in fact partly indexed to the results of the box office. Faced with the big-eared firm, which deems her complaint unfounded in a press release, the actress receives the support of several associations for the defense of women in the entertainment industry (Women in Film, ReFrame and Time’s Up), as well as Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.
Finally, the case is not settled in court since the two parties end up reaching an amicable agreement in October 2021. Scarlett Johansson then declares that she is ready to work again for Mickey’s house. On the other hand, the actress seems to be done with her character of Black Widow. Invited in “The Goop Podcast” hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow last April, she actually confided: “I’m done. The chapter is over. I’ve done everything I had to do.”
