Inspired by Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s film Cleopatra, the René Goscinny-Albert Uderzo duo have the idea of a plot for their sixth album ofAsterix.
Published in 1965, Asterix and Cleopatra tells the adventures of Asterix, Obelix and Getafix in Egypt. The trio comes to the aid of the architect Numérobis, responsible for building, in three months, a palace for Cleopatra. Together, they will have to thwart the tricks of Amonbofils, a rival of Numérobis, so that the queen wins her bet against Caesar.
Three years later, Goscinny and Uderzo adapted this album on the big screen in an animated version. Second animated feature film dedicated to famous heroes after Asterix the Gaul, released in 1967, Asterix and Cleopatra is a marvel of humor that has not aged a bit.
Carried by a quality technique, a high-flying dubbing and tasty dialogues, without forgetting the cult songs Cleopatra’s Bath And The Arsenic Pudding, the film has become a classic to see and re-watch. When it was released, it attracted nearly 2 million cinema viewers.
In 2002, producer Claude Berri considered the original album to be the most cinematic of the saga. Asterix. He then offered it to Alain Chabat, who directed Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, the live Asterix film having, to date, the best market at the French box office, accumulating more than 14.5 million admissions on its release. .
