Tonight on TV: the unfairly misunderstood comedy by Alain Chabat

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Alain Chabat transports us to a comedy at the Stone Age.

Based on an original idea by Jean-Paul Rouve and Maurice Barthélémy mixing thriller, detective and prehistoric film, the Robins des Bois troupe (which also includes Pierre-François Martin Laval, Marina Foïs, Pascal Vincent and Elise Larnicol) starts writing RRRrrr!!!, thus concretizing their desire to go to the cinema, after having passed on the boards and the small screen. On this occasion, they collaborated once again with Alain Chabat, then crowned with the success of Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra.

Screened at the opening of the Alpe d’Huez International Comedy Film Festival, RRRrrr!!! is however far from being unanimous with the press, collecting an average of 2.6 out of 5 on AlloCiné (for 20 critics). Le Parisien title in large print “Nuuuul!”, while L’Obs describes it as “pitiful and distressing pochade”, with “heartbreaking gags of nullity”. “A film neither made nor to be made” according to Télérama, and “not even funny” for Les Inrockuptibles.

Despite its 1.7 million admissions, RRRrrr!!! is considered a commercial failure. Nevertheless, it has, over the years, acquired the status of a cult work. A true UFO of the French cinematographic landscape, a little gem of absurd humor filled with references, it is undeniably remembered, as much as its famous lines. “It’s going to be all black!”…

RRRrrr!!! by Alain Chabat with Maurice Barthélémy, Jean-Paul Rouve, Pierre-François Martin-Laval…
