Tonight on TV: This cult fantasy film made a whole generation cry

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a little marvel of heroic fantasy.

Adapted (in part) from the eponymous novel by Michael Ende, The Neverending Story has become a cult feature film for an entire generation. We frankly did not expect Wolfgang Petersen, the director of the huge war film The Boat, in the fantasy department. However, in 1984, the German filmmaker signed a formidable fable on the power of the imagination.

Bastien, 10 years old, is passionate about adventure novels. One day, he steals a marvelous work inhabited by extraordinary creatures. He sinks feverishly into the fantastic universe of this book which fascinates him…

From the lucky dragon Falkor, to the giant stone man, passing by the terrifying wolf Gmork, it is a wonder at all times. But who says initiatory quest, says sacrifices. A poignant sequence thus particularly marked the young audience: that of the death of Artax, the white horse of the young hero Atreyu (Noah Hathaway), sucked by the swamps of melancholy.

Carried by a superb score by Giorgio Moroder (the song The Neverending Storyheard in season 3 of Stranger Things, was a huge success) and very endearing actors, The never-ending story is a film to watch or watch again to make sure you haven’t lost your child’s soul.

Want another TV tip for tonight? We recommend Tom Cruise’s most memorable stunt.
