Tonight on TV: Valérie Lemercier won the César for Best Actress for this role and it’s really deserved

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a fake biopic about a huge Quebec singer.

A fan of Céline Dion, Valérie Lemercier is particularly touched by the courage and solitude of the latter in 2016 – when the singer lost her husband and mentor, René Angélil.

So in the middle of promoting the film Marie-Francine, Valérie Lemercier announces on the radio that Céline Dion will be the subject of her next project. Encouraged by her production designer Emmanuelle Duplay, the filmmaker actually took the plunge.

For a year, she watched, read and listened to a lot of content on Céline Dion, then devoted herself to writing the script alongside Brigitte Buc (with whom she already collaborated on Palais Royal!). Their decision was immediately to write fiction freely inspired by the life of Céline Dion, emphasizing her love story, and not to write a classic biopic.

On screen, it is Valérie Lemercier (and Victoria Sio for the singing parts) who brings to life the title role: Aline, Céline’s fictional alter ego. Surrounded by a predominantly Quebecois and extremely talented cast (including Sylvain Marcel, Danielle Fichaud and Antoine Vézina), Valérie Lemercier is by turns funny, touching and eccentric. A performance rightly rewarded with the César for Best Actress.

With great admiration, daring and kindness, Valérie Lemercier creates a film that is both intimate and grandiose. Upon its release in 2020, Aline attracts 1.3 million French people to theaters.
